The Joint Danube Survey 3 attracts significant international cooperation from all Danube countries from Germany to Ukraine, including EU and non-EU members. The full-time International Team travelling almost the entire length of the Danube includes 18 scientists from Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.

The team uses up to four boats donated from different countries and institutions. Teams of national scientists help with sampling and testing on board the ships on river stretches within their countries.

Two ships will lead the expedition. Serbia’s Argus, the main laboratory ship during both previous surveys, was recently completely refurbished and includes instruments such as a continuous flow centrifuge, sieving machine, microscope, incubators and refrigerators. Romania’s Istros is a coastal and river research ship with six cabins, a laboratory and dining room.

For the fish sampling in the German Danube, the fish samples will be collected by the German team. For the fish survey in the Austrian reach of the Danube, Austria’s Via Donau is providing an in-kind donation of the Meßschiff IV vessel. For the fish survey from the Austria-Slovak border until the final destination, the Austrian ship Wien will be available with a smaller boat (Meßschiff I) fixed aside to provide living and working space for five to seven people.

Significant support is also provided by private sector companies operating in the Danube Basin. These include direct financial support from Donau Chemie, Coca-Cola Hellenic and The Coca-Cola Company. These companies are introduced in more detail below.

Local authorities and the media living near the Danube also helped in raising awareness and concern about Danube pollution and the need for everyone to participate in making it clean and healthy.
